THE INSPIRATION

My inspiration for this diorama, came to me when I observed some abstract imagery on Pinterest. I browsed Pinterest for some ideas, of how to go about my diorama visually. Through the visual styles I was looking at, I was able to get a better idea of how to go about the 15 second story.
The images I was looking at featured mountains, landscape, and abstract cosmic imagery. This would play a huge part in how I went about direction the plot of the story.
Through my inspiration, my own interest, and motivation, I got to think about what type of story I was trying to tell. Since the inspiration played heavily on abstract cosmic imagery, I need a story to complement that style. I am motivated to tell and write stories that has deeper undertones and meaning. I decided to go in the direction of telling a story. Similar to the myths and stories that are told to inspire and amaze the audience with wonder and mystery.
The main detail of my diorama I wanted to emphasize is the abstract cosmic imagery. Which is displayed by the sky that shines with many stars. Since this detail was important to what I thoroughly enjoyed about the images that inspired me, I went about making the sky a center focus in the story as well. The story became a tale about how a man was able to bring the stars in the sky closer by using a mystical relic. They had found it while exploring a pyramid in the middle of a desert.

RENDERING

Now the assignment required that we animated and produced a 15 second animation with an opening and closing sequence. After I had an idea of how approach the story, it became time to write the storyboard. I wanted everything in its execution to be exaggerated and over the top. This meant I had to do things that were experimental. One of the things I wanted was a transition between night and day. This was the way I went about having the opening and closing sequence to my diorama. I wanted to approach this by making it look like a time-lapse.

Ideas

My idea for this time lapse was to rotate the background between night and day, then have the setting rotate with it. This rotation became the set up for my opening and closing sequence. Not only did I find this idea interesting, but I thought the idea would also help my diorama stand out and generate strong visual interest. Furthermore I wanted the setting to have layers to it. The idea was to have the foreground of the night seen shake and drop down away, and reveal the main focus of the story. The Main story being the legend of the man and the sky. The foreground drops to reveal the pyramid in the desert, where the man would stand on top to reveal a beam of light. This light would shine in the sky to then “pull the stars in closer”.

PRODUCTION

During production I made it so that the pyramid would build itself to then have the man stand on top of it, this added a pleasing effect in the end result. After I had built the first draft, it was time to make changes and revise. I realized to make those changes would be difficult because I’d have to go back into the assets to reformat something.

Obstacles & Conclusion

Another problem I faced was everything that I had designed was on one composition, which made it difficult to go in and make small changes. Since I had the experience, I decided to remaster the whole animation. This meant animating from scratch, but with the new experience I could approach it with better organization and structure. Although the original draft was good, you could tell I had more control with the process when remastering it. In conclusion I think the results turned out very well.
